Family business internationalization: an insight into opportunities and challenges.

2020

The theme of internationalization in family businesses is a highly topical issue that is increasingly attracting management scholars. This is because, in addition of being a particular type of business (Alcorn, 1982), they play a central role in most economies worldwide. Accounting for 65-80 percent of all the world’s firms, they generate around 70-90 percent of annual global GDP, and are the source of 50-80 percent of new jobs in most countries. Their essence lies in the close bond they have with their founders and above all, in the family’s involvement in the business ownership and management (Franco and Prata, 2019). This bond may prove to be a limit for fuelling internationalization pro…

When does family involvement produce superior performance in SME family business?

2016

Abstract This study analyzes how family involvement leads to high performance in SME-family businesses (SME-FB). This research considers family involvement in management and firm governance, development of family governance, firm size, generations in FB, and ownership concentration. Results show three combinations that lead to high performance: 1) a large-enough SME-FB with a family CEO and a board with significant presence of non-family directors; 2) a large-enough SME-FB in its first generation, without family government structures, and that a non-familial top managerial team runs; 3) a large-enough SME-FB with low ownership concentration and family governance structures.

Comprehensiveness Is a Cliché

2001

The purpose of this study was to explore professionals' orientation toward child assessment and planning. Semistructured questionnaire data and interview data were collected from child neurological units in Finland. Legislation in Finland does not specifically provide guidelines for family centeredness and comprehensiveness in early intervention, yet professionals have widely accepted these approaches in their work with children with disabilities and their families. Results of this study indicated that practices were not implemented consistently. Professionals' varying perceptions of the concept of comprehensiveness and family involvement seemed to interfere with the implementation of thes…

Elderly Parents’ Need for Help and Adult Children's Moving Decisions

2015

Recent changes in Finnish welfare policies have increased the need for family involvement in eldercare. This article uses qualitative interviews to study working adult daughters’ reasons for moving in with their parent(s). Coresidence was linked to the parents’ need for support, but also to the daughters’ life situations, family histories, the availability of welfare services, and cultural norms and values. The interviewees used the “familist” and “independent life” discourses in their speech. The familist discourse was used to argue for coresidence as a natural continuation of family traditions and life history, whereas the independent life discourse was used to legitimize the need for alt…

Psychometric analysis of the Scale of Teacher's Perception of School Adjustment (PROF-A)

2015

What Is a Business Family?

2007

Most businesses are argued to be family businesses, but this group of businesses is very heterogeneous. This is noticed in terms of differences in level of family in-volvement and influence in family businesses, and the F-PEC scale is a powerful tool when analysing such variations. However, all the families that are involved in these family businesses are also different. These families may be referred to as business families, but how do such families differ from each other? In order to be able to an-swer that question, one needs to start by defining a business family. During the search for such a definition, one will find that a business family may be positioned on a con-tinuous scale rangi…
